Moving House Declutter Checklist: What to Get Rid of and When

By North-Eastern Property Solutions ·

Every box you don’t pack is a box you don’t have to move, unpack and find a place for. Decluttering before a move saves time and money, and stops you carting years of junk into your new home. Here’s a week-by-week plan that works for moves in and out of Adelaide’s north-east.

8 weeks out: plan and book

  • Book your council hard waste collection now. This is the one most people leave too late. Tea Tree Gully warns its waits can run six to eight weeks, and Playford says its kerbside collections are often a four to six week wait. See our guide to council hard waste vs private removal for each council’s rules.
  • Get removalist quotes. Quotes are often based on volume, so the less you move, the better.
  • Walk through every room, shed and cupboard and make a rough list of the big items that won’t be coming.
  • Measure your new place. Will the couch, the fridge and the king bed actually fit?

6 weeks out: start with storage

Start where the most junk hides and the least emotion lives. Storage areas are also where the bulkiest, heaviest items tend to be, so clearing them early gives you time to sell, donate or book a collection without a last-minute scramble.

Shed, garage and carport

  • Broken tools, old timber, rusty bikes and dead mowers
  • Old paint, chemicals and gas bottles (set these aside for free drop-off — see below)
  • Boxes that haven’t been opened since the last move
  • Car parts, old tyres and scrap metal

Roof space and under the house

  • Old suitcases, Christmas decorations you no longer use, kids’ toys and baby gear
  • Anything water-damaged or chewed by pests

If the shed is a big job on its own, a garage and shed clean-out can clear it in a single visit.

4 weeks out: room by room

Use four piles in every room: keep, sell, donate, dispose.

Kitchen

  • Duplicate utensils, chipped crockery and mismatched containers
  • Appliances you haven’t used in a year
  • Out-of-date pantry items (start eating down the pantry and freezer now)

Bedrooms

  • Clothes that haven’t been worn in a year
  • Old mattresses and bed frames — especially if you’re buying new for the new house. See our mattress disposal guide.

Living areas

  • Furniture that won’t suit the new layout
  • Old DVDs, books and magazines
  • Dead electronics and tangled cables (e-waste is banned from landfill in SA — our e-waste guide explains where it goes)

Bathroom and laundry

  • Old towels and linen (animal shelters often take them)
  • Half-empty cleaning products — use them up, or take them to a chemical drop-off

3 weeks out: sell and donate

  • List items for sale on online marketplaces or local buy-swap-sell groups. Good photos and a fair price move furniture quickly.
  • Donate clean, usable clothing, homewares and furniture. Call charities first — many have rules about furniture and won’t take used mattresses.
  • Set a deadline. Anything not sold by the final week gets donated or disposed of.

2 weeks out: hazardous items

Removalists generally won’t move paint, chemicals, fuels or gas bottles, and they can’t go in your bins. Householders can drop them off free at a Green Industries SA depot — for the north-east, that’s NAWMA Edinburgh North or the Campbelltown Works Depot. Our paint and chemical disposal guide has the details.

Also:

  • Drain fuel from mowers and other petrol tools if they’re coming with you.
  • Use up or give away pot plants if you’re moving far — and check whether the new place allows them.

Quick guide: where things go

  • Furniture in good condition: Sell or donate
  • Broken furniture, old mattresses: Council hard waste or a rubbish removal
  • Fridges, washers, dryers: Council hard waste, NAWMA (metal is free) or appliance removal
  • TVs, computers, cables: E-waste drop-off — never the bin
  • Paint, chemicals, gas bottles: Free Green Industries SA depot
  • Green waste: Green bin, council drop-off days or green waste removal
  • Building offcuts, bricks, tiles: Private removal (councils exclude these)
  • Clothes, linen, homewares: Charity bins and op shops

Final week: clear the rest

By now you’ll have a pile of things that didn’t sell, weren’t eligible for council collection, or didn’t fit in the hard waste allowance. This is the point to book a rubbish removal so it’s gone before the truck arrives. A removal is especially useful for:

  • Bulky furniture you can’t get to the verge yourself
  • Green waste from a last-minute yard tidy-up
  • Anything over the council limit or excluded from collection
  • Rubbish left in a rental before the final inspection

Moving day and handover

  • Do a final sweep of every cupboard, the shed, the roof space and the meter box.
  • Check the yard — garden waste, kids’ toys, pot plants, and rubbish behind the shed.
  • Take photos of every room and the yard if you’re renting. Our end of lease clean up checklist shows what landlords and agents look for.
  • Leave keys and remotes where the new owner or agent expects them.

Selling before you move?

If the house is going on the market first, declutter before the photos. A clear garage, a tidy yard and fresh mulch make a home look bigger and cared for. Our preparing your home for sale checklist covers what to focus on, and our pre-sale clean ups handle it for you.
