Construction Site Clean Up Before Handover: What Builders Need Done
By North-Eastern Property Solutions ·
Handover is where a build is judged. A site full of offcuts and packaging takes the shine off good workmanship. Here’s what a proper construction clean up covers — and how to make it easier.
What a pre-handover clean up includes
- Timber offcuts, plasterboard and cornice scraps
- Packaging from fixtures, appliances and fittings
- Bricks, rubble and concrete spoil
- Rubbish left in the garage, yard and verge
- A final sweep-out so the site is ready to inspect
Clean as you go
The best handovers come from builds that never got messy in the first place. Booking regular waste pick-ups at the end of each stage — after frame, after lock-up, after fit-off — keeps the site safer for trades, avoids a huge final clean and means you’re not paying for a skip to sit on site for weeks.
A simple stage-by-stage plan
- After demolition or site prep: clear old materials, rubble and anything left from the existing structure before the slab or frame goes in
- After frame: timber offcuts, strapping, packaging and fixings that collect around the frame and in the yard
- After lock-up and plastering: plasterboard offcuts, cornice scraps, boxes and wrapping — usually the bulkiest stage
- After fit-off: appliance and fixture packaging, cabinetry offcuts and the general mess from multiple trades
- Pre-handover: a final clear-out of every room, the garage, yard and verge, then a sweep so the site is ready to inspect
What builders tend to miss
Even on tidy sites, the same areas get forgotten in the rush to finish:
- The verge and footpath. Packaging blows out, and offcuts end up in the nature strip. Councils and neighbours notice this first.
- Behind and under things. Gaps behind the garage, under the eaves line and down narrow side paths collect screws, wrap and offcuts.
- The garage. It often becomes the site store, and the last of the materials sit there until handover day.
- Leftover materials. Spare bricks, pavers and timber that the client doesn’t want. Decide early whether they stay or go, so they’re not a surprise at inspection.
Getting a fast, accurate price
Send through the site address, the stage of the build, and a few photos of the waste and where it sits on the block. Tell us about heavy materials — bricks, concrete, soil and tiles attract weight-based tip fees, so large amounts are priced separately — and anything awkward like a sloping block, a narrow side access or upstairs rooms. If you have a handover date, include it.
Renovations are different
With a renovation, the homeowner is often living in the house. Waste needs to be removed quickly and tidily. We load from inside the home and take everything away the same visit — old kitchens, bathroom fittings, flooring and plaster — so the next trade can get straight in. See renovation waste removal.
Hazardous materials
We don’t remove asbestos, chemicals or other hazardous materials. In South Australia, asbestos must be handled by a licensed removalist. If you’re working on a home built before 1990, have any suspect materials tested before demolition begins — then we’ll clear everything else.
Leftover paints, solvents and adhesives also can’t go in with general site waste. Household quantities of chemicals and liquid paint can be dropped off free at NAWMA’s Edinburgh North Resource Recovery Centre or the Campbelltown Works Depot on Newton Road, under the Green Industries SA and Paintback schemes. For larger trade quantities, check with your supplier or a licensed waste contractor. Our guide to what rubbish removal can’t take covers the full list.
Small demolition jobs
Some builds start with something that has to come down first — an old garden shed, a carport, a pergola, timber fencing or a water tank. We dismantle and remove these as part of the clean up, so the site is clear before work starts. See light demolition.
