Too Much Green Waste for Your Bin? Your Options in North East Adelaide
By North-Eastern Property Solutions ·
Spring and autumn are prime time for pruning across the north-east — and one big session with the hedge trimmer can produce more green waste than your bin takes in two months. Here’s how to deal with it.
Option 1: Your council green bin
Your green organics bin is the cheapest option for normal garden maintenance. The catch is capacity: once it’s full, you’re waiting for the next collection, and a big prune can take many weeks to work through. Branches also need to be cut to fit, and the lid has to close.
A few bin tips
- Put the bulky stuff in first and clippings on top, so the bin packs down
- Cut branches short so they don’t jam when the truck tips the bin
- Leave out soil, rocks, plastic pots and bagged waste — they can’t be composted
Option 2: Use your council’s green waste help
Council hard waste collections don’t take green waste — every council in our area excludes it — but several councils offer something separate for garden waste:
- City of Tea Tree Gully: the council runs Enviro Care, free green waste drop-off days for residents at St Agnes Recreation Park on Smart Road. Leaves, clippings and branches up to 20cm thick are accepted, in cars and trailers only, and contractors can’t use it.
- City of Salisbury: residents can book one free garden organics drop-off voucher in spring for a NAWMA Resource Recovery Centre (Pooraka or Edinburgh North). Outside that, green waste is accepted at the centres for a fee.
- City of Playford and Town of Gawler: large amounts of garden waste can be taken to a NAWMA Resource Recovery Centre, where fees apply.
- City of Port Adelaide Enfield: residents can book free green waste drop-offs at Integrated Waste Services in Wingfield — up to four a year, residents in person only.
These programs are worth using if you have a trailer and the timing suits. Council rules change, usually at the start of each financial year, so check your council’s website before you load up. Our areas we service page links to each council.
Option 3: Take it to a drop-off yourself
Outside council programs, green waste drop-off facilities accept garden waste, usually for a fee based on the load. This works if you have a trailer or ute, the time to load it and the energy for a few trips. Branches, palm fronds and wet clippings are bulky and heavy, so it’s often more trips than you think.
Option 4: Book a green waste removal
A removal service comes to you, loads everything by hand and takes it straight to green waste recycling. It’s the quickest way to clear:
- Piles of prunings after a big cut back
- Hedge, palm and shrub trimmings
- Branches left after an arborist has been
- Overgrown yards before a sale or a new tenancy
We regularly clear green waste from tight side paths and backyards with no vehicle access — everything is carried out by hand.
What affects the price
Green waste is light but bulky, so it’s priced mainly on volume. A neat pile of prunings is quicker to load than branches spread across a yard. Stumps, root balls and soil are heavy, so mention them, along with long carries or a yard with no side gate. A photo of the pile is usually all we need for an upfront price.
Make it go further: recycle it
Clean green waste is turned into compost and mulch. Keep it separate from general rubbish (no plastic pots, bags or timber with nails) so it can be recycled properly.
Want the yard looking good too?
Removal is only half the job. As part of our property maintenance work we can tidy garden beds and spread fresh mulch, leaving the yard looking cared for.
